Best Window Shade Styles 2012 in New York

Posted by

Keeping current with the fashion trends is a must in New York, and window shades are no exception. Whether you are starting fresh with all-new window shades or simply replacing them one room at a time, you’ll want to know this year’s hottest trends in window fashions.

  1. Natural and organic materials. It’s never been more fashionable to be eco-friendly, and now you can express your style with window shades made from natural materials. Most popular are roman shades made from bamboo, sisal, grasses, reeds and jute, all eco-friendly resources. New Yorkers will love the way they gently diffuse the light, and with the top down/bottom up feature, you can position the shade anywhere you want in the window for privacy and light control. And if you want a truly distinctive look, even drapery is now available in natural materials. Natural shades are available in many styles: roman shades, rollup, sliding panels and more. Concerned about privacy or light filtering with natural materials? Add an optional liner to create the level you need.
  2. Media rooms. With the surge of in-home theaters and media rooms, blackout window treatments are enjoying an increase in popularity. To fully re-create the experience of the theater, you will want window shades that block out all light, especially for daytime viewing. There is an ever-expanding array of blackout options: cellulars, woven woods, roman shades, panel tracks and pleated shades. To assist with surround-sound, you will also want to consider the sound-absorbing quality of your window treatments. This is where heavier fabric blinds like roman shades and drapery will come into play. You might even try layering window treatments: a blind with a velvety drape over it will not only help with sound, but will create that old theater atmosphere that makes your room cozy and inviting.
  3. Motorized window shades. More homeowners than ever before are concerned with the overall safety of their blinds. Traditional blinds feature cord operation, which is still a good option. But for New York homes with small children and pets, cordless and motorized lift options are more appropriate. Without cords, not only do they offer safety, but a cleaner, sleeker look that many New Yorkers prefer. Cordless operation couldn’t be simpler: simply push up or pull down on the integrated handle to any position you desire. Cordless options exist for nearly every type of window shade: cellulars, wood and woven wood, roman shades, mini blinds, roller shades, solar shades and pleated shades. Motorized remote control window treatments offer the simplicity of push-button operation for your blinds, and are a great addition for hard-to-reach windows or simple luxury.
  4. Energy-saving shades. Cellular shades offer energy savings through their ability to block outdoor temperature extremes, resulting in less energy consumption. Today’s cellular shades (also called honeycomb shades) are available in a variety of styles, with five different pleat sizes to suit your window, plus single, double and even new triple-cell configurations for maximum insulation power. Solar shades are very popular in New York and other metro areas because they offer a level of energy savings by blocking UV rays. Solar shades reduce glare, preserve views, and limit solar heat gain. They also help prevent fading of fabrics and furniture, so they’re a great purchase. Because they are semi-transparent, solar shades are sold in various degrees of “openness” from 3 to 15%, depending on the exposure of your window and the amount of light you want to block, balanced by the view you want to keep. Be sure to order swatches so you know what to expect. (That’s true for any window covering!)
