Décor doesn’t always need to appear symmetrical and classic. If you are like me, eclectic pieces, bold colors, and intricate patterns brighten even the gloomiest days. Patterns come in every color, many textures, and abundant sizes. Mix-matched patterns and colors are all the rage this season. Make sure you follow a few guidelines when doing so to let your home shine like it is supposed to.
Styling With Pillows
If you are new to decorating, my suggestion is to begin mix-matching colors and patterns with pillows. Easily interchangeable and relatively inexpensive, this can be a great way to get your foot in the door. For all the do-it-yourselfers out there, make your own pillow cases with a variety of patterns and pillows you already have laying around and try your hand at mixing and matching! Your eye for mixing may be better than you think.
Going Neutral
No matter how many times you thumb through racks of clothes, piles of fabric, or nail polish at your monthly mani/pedi session, blacks, whites, and beiges are always your go-to choices. Sound familiar? Don’t strain yourself trying to liven up your space if it is out of your comfort zone; you can still mix and match with neutrals.
Adding Window Treatments
One of the easiest ways to bring patterns into the home is by beginning with your window treatment. Curtains act as a backdrop for bold patterns large or small, and fabulous fabrics come in any color your heart desires. If you are just beginning to decorate a room, begin by looking for a fun Roman Shade fabric that makes you melt. Begin your mix-matching with your window treatments and then move on to other accessories like accent rugs, furniture, and art. This is a guaranteed way to make your home sparkle, as window treatments are one of the first things we immediately notice when entering any room.
Keeping The Same Color Scheme
Falling in love with a variety of patterns is okay, and quite chic when you combine them properly. One trick for less eclectic designers who still want their space to look creative is to combine at least three different patterns in similar hues. Try putting together a large print, a geometric print, and a small print all in the same color scheme to make your décor pop.
Finding The Right Pattern
The only thing worse than a bland room is one with horribly mixed patterns, am I right? From floral to fret, herringbone to harlequin, plaid to paisley, there are endless possibilities to mix-match. If there is one busy pattern tugging at your heart strings, try finding other patterns that have less going on to pair with it. Place patterns in different areas of the room so there isn’t too much going on in one space. Creating Colors
Patterns aren’t the only way you can mix up your décor. For a bold, fun look, go out of the box and combine colors that everyone else is too scared of. Pink and yellow? Sounds fabulous. Orange and blue? Sure, why not! Play it safe by including white window treatments, neutral furniture, or solid fabrics to avoid having too much going on. Color instantly makes me happy! Find pictures of rooms you love and emulate them look to your best ability, that way you will already have an idea of how things will turn out.
