Of the few that I know: &#8220;<strong>Mistral<\/strong>,&#8221; a stormy, cold wind that blows through Provence in Southern France; &#8220;<strong>Sirocco<\/strong>,&#8221; a fierce wind that whips dust and sand from North Africa all the way to Europe (remember, &#8220;Lawrence of Arabia&#8221; and the desolate, dry wind pervading the mood of the movie) ; <strong>Chinook<\/strong>, a moist, heated wind that descends on the Rocky Mountains, melting snow in a matter of minutes; <strong>Hawk<\/strong>, the breezy Chicago wind that soars through Lake Michigan; and to us Southern Californians, our infamous &#8220;<strong>Santa Ana<\/strong>&#8221; winds, that deluge us with hot dry air that swoops over the desert mountains, blasting heat, breathing wildfire, nicknamed, &#8220;murder wind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1_edit1.png\" rel=\"mfp\" aria-label=\"View larger image 1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8758 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1_edit1.png\" alt=\"Old yellow building with weathered blue window and small balcony with rusted iron railing and tattered curtain blowing in\" width=\"600\" height=\"897\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1_edit1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/1_edit1-200x300.png 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Winds have a rich history, distinctive with personalities, appearing in science, mythology and literature. After all, remember that Aeolus, one of the three Greek gods of the wind, gave Odysseus a tightly closed bag of wind to open when needed to sail him quickly home to Ithaca. To his dismay, the sailors on his ship thought the bag contained gold and riches and burst open the bag in a rush of greed. The winds quickly dispersed and Odysseus was doomed to travel for many more years. The names alone evoke romance and fascination. Here are some of my favorites:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Squamish<\/strong>: A strong, violent wind that blows across the fjords in British Columbia in Canada.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Khamsin<\/strong>: A hot, dry Saharian wind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Haboob<\/strong>: A stormy wind followed by rain.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matacabras<\/strong>: A Spanish mean wind that &#8220;kills goats.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Landlash<\/strong>: A severe Scottish gale wind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Coho<\/strong>: A cold, heavy wind off of Greenland and Antarctica.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Chocolatero<\/strong>: A Mexican gulf coast squall, colored by brown dust.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bali<\/strong>: A forceful East wind in Java, and of course, a brand of beautiful window treatments.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dust Devil<\/strong>: A circling updraft wind, dispersing dust in a swirl.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Loo<\/strong>: A strong, hot summer wind in India.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Etesian<\/strong>: A cool, summer Mediterranean wind.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kohilo<\/strong>: A Hawaiian gentle breeze- Jimmy Buffet take me away!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1.png\" rel=\"mfp\" aria-label=\"View larger image 6\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-8763 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1.png\" alt=\"Tall palm trees swaying strongly in a windy sky, with a bright blue background and some clouds\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" data-sizes=\"auto\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1.png 600w, https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1-107x107.png 107w, https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/4_edit1-120x120.png 120w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These are just a smattering of different winds, each carrying a local story and feeling which connect us to much more than the weather. Perhaps, that is why the wind, fluttering, raging, storming, wafting, floating and swooshing through our windows fascinates me.<\/p>\n<p><a many windows covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/shutters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shutters<\/a> that have been banged up and destroyed by hurricane winds, awnings trampled and sucked up by tornado winds, shards of glass on windowsills broken by gales and loos.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/6_edit1.png\" us with a verdant Spring, I dream of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blindsgalore.com\/sheer-shades\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sheer window treatments<\/a>, gently swaying and floating as soft
