Blackout

Ever been woken up by the bright morning sunshine or had trouble watching your favorite movie because of the glare off your television screen?  Blackout window treatments are able to darken a room by blocking up to 99% of visible light, making them perfect for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and anywhere you need as much light blocking as possible.  Please note that the terms room-darkening and opaque are sometimes used by the manufacturers to indicate greater light filtering than a semi-opaque material, but these are not blackout window coverings.

Window blackout can be achieved with a number of different styles to satisfy your design needs as well.  Some shades, such as cellulars and romans, are made from a blackout material to block light, while woven wood shades require an attached blackout liner.  We have carefully chosen this selection of products and styles that will provide the best blackout experience for you.  There are even options for sliding windows and skylights.

things to consider:

Keep in mind that the blackout property of a window covering applies only to light trying to pass through the shade - you will also need to consider light going around the shade.  For blinds ordered as inside mount, a small deduction will be taken from your ordered size by the manufacturer so that the blind will fit inside the window; depending on your window depth and construction, light may creep around the side of the blind.  A drapery or side panel can help cover up this light seepage.

Another option is an outside mount shade - just remember to add enough width and length to fully cover the window plus part of the wall to prevent light from going around the shade.  Although there may still be a soft glow around the edges of the shade, no direct sunlight will pass through the shade material.
