Easy Ways to Add Color To Your Interior Design

Colorful accessories and blinds for Washington homes

Here’s a common question I get: How can I add color to my interior? And it’s usually followed by: What if I don’t like it? I recently heard from a customer in Washington who told me she was afraid to use any color in her home, especially in window blinds. I gave her some ideas for adding color to her home quite easily, and, surprise, it doesn’t involve painting! Although paint is cheap, it’s not easy, and no one likes to paint! It’s hard work, or you have to hire someone to do it, which is expensive. So I’ve compiled some ideas for easy ways to infuse color into your home that won’t blow your budget, or an entire weekend. Most of them are also easy to change, so the commitment level is low.

Rugs. Even a small area rug at the kitchen sink or the rugs right inside (or outside) your doors can add a simple punch of color that makes a big difference. You can repeat the color in small doses throughout the room using flowers, vases, artwork and other accessories. At the front door, your mat can also give people a clue as to your interior design right from the start, so pick something that expresses your home’s personality or color scheme and have fun with it.

Blinds. If it’s time to get new blinds, or just time to refresh the look of a room or two, consider adding color at the windows. Our customer in Washington preferred drapery as a way to add color, but today’s blinds and shades are offered in a huge array of colors and styles, from solid colors to colorful patterns and more sedate tones. And new blinds or shades can offer a more refined look than drapery. Be sure to order samples of the colors you are considering—they can look quite different in your lighting. Most retailers offer free samples so you can see how they will look before you order.

Bedding. Changing your bedding is a great way to bring a fresh color to the bedroom. Or, if the room is already colorful, try a neutral scheme to tone things down and create a whole new feel. Washington has many great department stores that sell bedding ensembles and bed-in-a-bag sets that make it super easy to change out a room in just a few minutes. Some designers recommend switching your bedding seasonally twice a year to give your room a new look. So wash and store your older bedding and bring it back out next season.

Pillows. Pillows may be the best accessory for adding color to any room. Why? Because they are affordable and easy to change. Pillows can be used on chairs, beds, or sofas. Even huge floor pillows can be a fun way to jazz up a space. It’s fun to mix styles, sizes, fabrics and patterns on a sofa or throughout the room. And when you are tired of them, it’s so simple and cheap to replace them. Pillows are a great decorating impulse item!

Lighting. Maybe not the most obvious choice, but you can add color with new lamps or lamp shades to breathe new life into a room. Some great contemporary lamps can mix well even in traditional settings, and you don’t need to spend a fortune. Change just one thing in your room at first and see how it affects the mood of the room. Then, as you get inspired, you can add in other colorful elements to make your house the go-to house for colorful decorating ideas in your neighborhood.
