DIY Guide to Installing Motorized Blinds in Your Home

Blinds

Motorized blinds are one of the easiest window treatments to install at home. No electrician needed, no complicated wiring, and no special skills required. A drill, a screwdriver, a level, and about 30 to 60 minutes per window is all it takes. At Blindsgalore, 99% of customers measure and install their own window coverings, and motorized options are no different.

Before You Start

Gather a few basic tools (most are probably already in the junk drawer or garage):

  • Power drill with 5/64″ drill bit
  • Measuring tape
  • Level
  • Pencil
  • Screwdriver
  • Step ladder

Every Blindsgalore motorized shade ships with mounting brackets, screws, and instructions specific to the shade type. Everything needed comes in the box.

One important note: never submerge blinds or shades in water for cleaning, whether light filtering, blackout, or motorized. A soft cloth or gentle vacuum with an upholstery attachment is all that’s needed to keep them looking new.

Step 1: Measure the Windows

Accurate measurements make the difference between a shade that fits perfectly and one that doesn’t. Measure the width and height of each window in three spots, left, center, and right for width, and top, middle, and bottom for height. Use the smallest measurement.

For an inside mount, measure the exact window opening to the nearest 1/8 of an inch. For an outside mount, measure the area to be covered and add 2 to 3 inches on each side for better light control and privacy.

Step 2: Clear and Prep the Window Area

Remove any existing window treatments, curtain rods, or old hardware. Clean the window frame so the new brackets have a solid mounting surface. Give yourself plenty of room to work comfortably with a ladder.

Step 3: Mark and Install the Brackets

For an inside mount, the brackets screw into the top of the window frame through the hole at the top of each bracket. For an outside mount, the brackets screw into the wall through the holes on the back.

Here’s the process:

  • Hold each bracket in position and mark the screw holes with a pencil.
  • Use a level to confirm that everything is straight. Crooked brackets mean crooked shades, and those will bug you every single time you look at them.
  • Pre-drill holes with a 5/64″ drill bit. Pre-drilling prevents wood from splitting and makes driving screws much easier. Do not skip this step.
  • Secure brackets with the included screws. Snug is the goal, not overtightened. Stripped screws and cracked trim create more problems than they solve.

Confirm all brackets are level and aligned before moving on.

Step 4: Mount the Shade

Align the headrail of the motorized shade with the installed brackets. Insert the front of the headrail into the brackets and rock it backward until it clicks into place. Make sure the fabric is not pinched between the brackets and the headrail.

Give the shade a gentle tug to confirm everything is locked in securely.

For battery-powered motors, make sure the battery is fully charged before mounting. Most Blindsgalore motorized and wand motorized shades are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that charge via a micro-USB cable. The Blindsgalore Motorized Roller Shades come with RF motorization and a rechargeable battery built right in, with both light filtering and blackout fabric options.

Step 5: Set the Limits and Test

Once mounted, set the upper and lower limits so the shade knows where to stop. Follow the instructions included with the specific shade model, as the process varies slightly between products. Most involve holding a programming button on the remote and adjusting the shade to the fully open position, setting that limit, and then repeating for the fully closed position.

Test the operation several times. The shade should move smoothly and stop precisely at the programmed limits.

Step 6: Connect to Smart Home (Optional)

For smart home integration, a Connector Smart Hub connects through 2.4GHz Wi-Fi or directly to a router with an Ethernet cable. The Connector App controls and programs shade schedules, and the hub works with Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, Siri Shortcuts, Control4, and IFTTT.

Program shades to open with the morning alarm, close during peak afternoon sun, or operate on a schedule while on vacation. The Blindsgalore Envision Motorized Solar Shades are an excellent option for sun-drenched rooms where scheduled automation can reduce glare and protect furnishings throughout the day.

Many newer products also support Bluetooth control via a compatible device, make smart home functionality possible even without a Wi-Fi hub.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Skipping the pre-drill. Wood splits. Brackets wobble. Screws strip. A 5/64″ pilot hole takes five seconds and prevents all of that.

Overtightening screws. Snug contact holds the bracket. Cranking past that point cracks trim and crushes mounting surfaces.

Forgetting the level. A shade that’s off by even a fraction of an inch will look uneven and may wear unevenly over time.

Not charging the battery first. A dead battery right after installation is frustrating. Charge fully before mounting.

No-Drill Option

For renters or anyone who prefers zero holes in the walls, Blindsgalore offers No Drill shades that install in minutes. No tools, no hardware, no damage. A tension headrail snaps into place for a secure fit, and each style is crafted from premium materials and made to exact measurements.

What About Wand Motorized Shades?

Wand motorized shades are another popular option. The Boutique Motorized Roller Shades feature a motorized wand that mounts on either the left or right side of the shade. The wand comes with a rechargeable battery and charges via a mini USB power adapter. Wands are available in 24″, 36″, 48″, and 60″ lengths, so there’s a fit for virtually any window height. The installation process is the same as standard motorized shades, just with the added wand component.
