A Chill In The Air Through Our Windows

Cooler days are on the way as today the Autumnal Equinox, an astrological event, marks the changing of the sun from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere. The sun’s warmth and direct sunlight fades for us as the days get shorter and night descends earlier. As the sun crosses the equator on its seasonal march, a special moment of balance is created today (7:29 pm PT) as the days and nights are of equal length and the sun rises due east and sets due west. I have to think that this exceptional bit of time is full of significance and, even more so for me, since I was born today on the crest of change.

Not only do I feel a vibrancy but a deeper tone and a somber spirit pervades my feelings. The burnished colors, the tang in the air, the slant of light, the dipping temperature, the smoky smells are changing perceptively…a new season is emerging yet at the same time, life is closing down. Creatures are putting on their winter coats, the flowers are folding into dry seed pods, the trees are unfurling their brilliant fall colors, to drop crisp and brittle leaves. A muted, monochromatic landscape will envelop us soon.

With the chill wind that is blowing in through my windows, it is time to think about treating our windows to keep the cold air out, so warmth can keep us nourished during the frigid, bleak months ahead. Here are my favorite window treatments that will do just that. Don’t wait too long! Before you know it, you will be wrapped in your down comforter, lounging by a crackling fire, snugly perched in your cozy protected home.

Cellular Shades

Cellular shades are my go- to when it comes to insulation. You know how slick they look and how they come in a zillion colors but you will need a double cell if your chill factor is below zero. Levolor has the Energy Shield which is a clear plastic liner that is built into the center of the shade which prevents air from actually flowing in through the fabric.  Comfortex has the Plus Sidetrack Insulation System that is installed inside the window casing. Additionally, there are two foam seals that prohibit the cold air from leaking in and the warm air from escaping; one is above the headrail and the other is under the bottom rail.  Did you know that if you install this Plus Sidetrack System, these cellulars qualify for tax credits?  Go for it!

Roman Shades

Roman Shades are always elegant and decor-wise but the Blindsgalore Romans are an added plus because you can add upgraded liners. The Thermal Sateen and the Premium Blackout Liners both provide extra insulation against cold air blowing in through these flocked liners. Remember, that if you can do an inside mount on Romans, you will have minimal gaping at the edges and a tighter seal to keep your windows and your toes warm and toasty.

Shutters

You can never match the beautiful detail and structure of shutters, but don’t overlook their ability to create a tight closure over your windows. Mounted properly, the louvers maintain a close-fitting seal and are so energy efficient. Shutters are not just for looks and not just for balmy, coastal living. Shutters were first and foremost mounted on the outside of homes to be closed to create a barricade against stormy, freezing weather…to keep you shuttered in from the cold. Used inside, shutters are just as weather-worthy.

Drapery

Drapery is a great choice as a generous outside mount of 6″ fabric overlap on each side of the widow and 6″ above the window offers windows extra warmth. I like to think that drapery is like a long, luxurious window blanket. Since drapery has an abundance of fabric, there will be minimal leaking around the edges. Our Blindsgalore Boutique Drapery Collection even comes with a standard premium liner for added protection. As an extra bonus, an interlining can be ordered, making this even more energy efficient. Drapery really multitasks and if used over another window treatment, you can double the warmth. Drapery is a stunning window treatment and a hardworking winter warrior.
