Disney’s Mistakes, Blindsgalore’s Inspiration

For those of us with kids, the new Disney movies have been a bit of a mixed blessing. Sure, the little ones want to watch “Frozen” for the millionth time but if I have to hear that song one more time… I digress. On the positive side, Disney has taken some real risks lately and tackled some big ideas.

“Finding Nemo” was essentially a story of overcoming disabilities and grappling with how to keep our children safe without transferring our fears to them. “Inside Out” is a beginning Psych 101 course, a la Pixar, with a child’s emotions running amok, finally coming together so Riley can balance her complex feelings. Who can forget the casting of a strong female heroine (actually two) in the biggest movie of the decade, “Frozen.” Yeah, I know you are thinking “Star Wars, The Force Awakens,” but I have to go with Girl Power!

Since Disney is such a hit-making Goliath, one would assume that changes to a movie are sorted out in the early stages of production. After all, it takes cruise ships miles to turn around.  It turns out this lumbering giant movie machine is much lighter on its feet than one would expect.

Earlier in the week, Gizmodo, my go-to design and technology blog, covered the “problems” with the release of Disney’s new movie, “Zootopia”. I won’t be a movie spoiler, but it is a tale of bias and stereotypes. As the movie was nearing completion, the animation team at Disney realized that having a pessimistic fox becoming enlightened to the bright side of life by a spunky rabbit was a tired cliché. After a final wrap of the movie, the team swiftly swapped the main character and the supporting characters roles.

Keep in mind, creating animated movies involves years of laborious production. Nevertheless, Disney decided that their imprimatur of perfection had to be upheld and in the name of producing superior movies, more work needed to be done. Much of the film was scrapped and the animators cheerfully went to work re-crafting the movie.
