The BG Beat: Thanksgiving

Living Thanks

Giving thanks is a human-wide practice. I’m taken with those who practice living thanks. In the US, the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Thanksgiving Address ceremony and the Aloha spirit live thanks. Around the world, New Zealand people’s Hakarimata, Wabi Sabi, Namaste and Ubuntu practices live thanks, too. For the big day, my mom and I will bring this Thanksgiving Reader to our Blindsgalore team’s and at home feasts like we have been for five years now.

What I’m Making

A beautiful jar of mystery is preserved lemons (hint: homemade holiday gift) and when ready they give a refreshing pow and funk. I’ve used mine in lemon cake, pesto, and brussels sprouts salad (a friend says they livened up her feta dip, too). Place clean scored lemons in a jar and cover with salt, good water and lemon juice. Shake here and there while they ripen on the countertop. A little goes a long way.

Starry Walks

Instead of fighting the 4:30p sunset this year, I’m leaning into night walks. My crew comprises largely of small boys and multiplying dogs so we load up on our stroller blankets, hot cider and blinking clip lights. I reminisce strolling with my once autumn newborns chest to chest during their witching hour and listening to my favorite walking song. Would that I, by Hozier if you were wondering.

Everyone’s Favorite

Our team spilled the tea on turkey day delights. Everyone has a favorite. A favorite show. A favorite season. A favorite person (looking at you, mom). Thanksgiving is no different. Here’s how our team weighs in on the day and their favorites.
