Find “Hygge” At Home

Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”), the Danish concept of coziness and comfort, invites us to slow down and savor life’s simple pleasures. Since Danes rank as one of the happiest countries in the world, Hygge is a major factor in creating this warm and fuzzy attitude that envelops life in the Nordic countries where darkness and cold persists throughout much of the year.

All about finding small personal ways to imbue a sense of togetherness, solitude and intimacy, being centered in the home, Hygge is both an internal temperament of positive feelings coupled with our external surroundings that forge bonhomie, warmth and well-being. Whether it’s sipping tea by candlelight or gathering with loved ones, hygge emphasizes creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Here are 18 ways to embrace hygge in your home and turn it into a sanctuary of tranquility.

Light Candles Everywhere

Candles are at the heart of hygge. Their soft, flickering glow creates a calming ambiance that no overhead light can replicate. Scatter them throughout your home, from the dining table to the bathroom, and opt for unscented or naturally fragranced flames to maintain a soothing vibe.

Did you know that Denmark burns more candles per person than anywhere in Europe or the USA? 85% of Danes consider candles an essential part of Hygge and I agree!

Invest in Soft Textures

Bring in plush blankets, chunky knit throws, and an array of cushions. Layering different textures – wool, velvet, faux fur – adds depth and warmth, making any space feel cozier and more inviting.

Create a Reading Nook

Designate a corner with a comfy chair, a soft blanket, and a stack of your favorite books. Hygge is about finding joy in quiet moments, and nothing says cozy like curling up with a good read.

Add Warm Lighting

Swap out harsh, bright lights for softer options. String lights, table lamps with warm-toned bulbs, and even dimmable fixtures can instantly change the mood of a room.

Incorporate Nature

Bring the outdoors inside with houseplants, fresh flowers, or branches in a vase. Natural elements, like wood and stone, add a grounding touch and connect you to the rhythms of nature.

Enjoy Comforting Scents

Scents can be incredibly comforting. Use essential oil diffusers, incense, or candles with cozy fragrances like vanilla, cinnamon, or pine. They’ll help set the mood for relaxation.

Embrace Minimalism

Hygge isn’t about excess; it’s about simplicity. Declutter your spaces and keep only items that bring you joy or serve a purpose. A tidy home fosters a peaceful mind.

Cook Comfort Food

Hygge extends to the kitchen, where slow-cooked meals, hearty stews, and freshly baked bread reign supreme. Gather around the table with loved ones and savor every bite.

Host Small Gatherings

Invite close friends or family over for an intimate evening of board games, storytelling, or sharing a meal (potlucks are strongly encouraged). Connection is a core part of hygge, and the focus should always be on quality time.

Rugs, Rugs Everywhere

Rugs add both visual and physical warmth to a room. Opt for soft, thick options and layer them over hardwood floors or even other rugs to create a cozy retreat for your feet.

Unplug and Be Present

Hygge encourages mindfulness. Put away devices, turn off the TV, and focus on the present moment. Whether you’re enjoying a quiet evening alone or connecting with others, being present is key.

Get Outside

The Danes say there is no bad weather, only bad clothes. Don’t let snow and ice and wintry blasts keep you from brisk walks and outside activities or freezing as you dash in and out of life. Dress warmly with a merino wool layer next to your skin, leggings, a down jacket, boots and a cute pompom hat. When you thwart chilly weather from the outside, your insides will automatically be soothed.

Hygge is not just a design type; it’s a lifestyle that values comfort, connection, and contentment. By embracing these simple yet profound practices, you can transform your home into a haven of warmth and happiness, no matter the season (but we love it best when it’s cold outside).
